Upon docking at Cochin Port, your local guide will be waiting to greet you and escort you to your private vehicle. Start your journey through Cochin, a city that beautifully combines cultural influences from the Portuguese, Dutch, and British eras.
Your first stop is the historic Mattancherry Palace (Dutch Palace), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the Portuguese in the 16th century and later renovated by the Dutch, this palace is a fine example of traditional Kerala architecture. Inside, marvel at the vibrant murals depicting stories from the Ramayana and Mahabharata, offering a glimpse into the region's rich artistic history.
Next, visit the Paradesi Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the Commonwealth, established in 1568. Located in the famous Jew Town, this synagogue is a blend of Eastern and Western craftsmanship, with Belgian chandeliers, hand-painted Chinese tiles, and brass pillars adorning its interior.
Continue your exploration with a visit to St. Francis Church, the oldest European-built church in India. Originally the burial place of Vasco da Gama, the famous Portuguese explorer, the church still holds a tombstone in his honor, even though his remains were later moved to Lisbon.
A short walk will bring you to Santa Cruz Basilica, a stunning example of colonial architecture. This church, built by the Portuguese and later elevated to the status of a cathedral, features beautiful frescoes and vibrant ceilings depicting biblical scenes, reflecting Kochi’s rich colonial past.
Optional: Relish a traditional Kerala-style lunch at a local restaurant to savor the region's authentic flavors.
In the afternoon, visit the Kerala Folklore Museum, a treasure trove of over 4,000 exhibits that showcase Kerala’s rich heritage. From traditional masks and tribal art to sculptures and costumes, the museum offers an in-depth exploration of the cultural history of Kerala.
Next, head to the famous Chinese Fishing Nets, a unique feature of Cochin's coastline. These giant nets, introduced by Chinese traders in the 14th century, are a spectacular sight. Watch the local fishermen in action, as they lower and raise the nets, using a technique passed down through generations.
Finish your day at the vibrant Spice Market in Broadway, where you can shop for aromatic spices such as pepper, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon. This market is a great place to pick up authentic Kerala spices and other local souvenirs.
After your exploration, your guide will escort you back to Cochin Port for your departure, ensuring a timely return. Reflect on your journey through Cochin, a city where history, culture, and vibrant flavors converge to create unforgettable memories.
